PLAYFUL MUSICIANS

Musikgarten® My Day (newborn – 3 years w/caregiver present)

These classes are the first step toward bonding musically with your child. Activities include bouncing and rocking songs, finger plays, body awareness games, singing, moving, dancing, listening and playing instruments. All of these activities stimulate the brain, foster physical development, and cultivate listening skills.

Wiggles & Giggles (newborn – 3 years w/caregiver present)

Wiggles & Giggles aims to help babies and toddlers experience the fun and magic of music and movement through our own special twist on the traditional Musikgarten curriculum. In this class, we will sing, bounce, rock, dance, and play instruments together, laying the foundation necessary for success in music and aiding the child’s social, emotional, mental, and physical development along the way.  Using music ranging from Mozart to modern, adults and children alike will enjoy an atmosphere of fun and excitement as we build these skills. Little Maestros (3-5 years)

In Little Maestros, children will continue to develop socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically through music and movement while discovering the sensory world around them.  This class builds upon the activities that they enjoyed as toddlers (singing, dancing, playing instruments), and adds the excitement of tonal instruments, sensory activities, pattern reading, imaginative play, storytelling, crafts, and more…all through the magic of music! Instrument kits are not included in fee but can be purchased separately.

Musikgarten® My Home Place (3.5-5 years)

Children at this age are growing physically and intellectually at a rapid pace! This class capitalizes on this development and provides musical activities to help children sing more tunefully, move with expressivity to various styles of music, and read, write, and play rhythmic patterns on various instruments.

EXPLORING MUSICIANS

Theatre Explorers 1 (5-8 years)

Use your creativity, imagination, and sense of fun to explore the world of theatre! Students will participate in collaborative activities to learn basic theatrical techniques and prepare for a small showcase performance on the last day of class.

Vocal Explorers (5-8 years)

Explore all that your voice can do through song and vocal exploration.  This class will teach vocal technique for the young singer through songs and music theory using solfege. This class culminates in a performance at a CVSM Recital on Sunday, Nov. 19

Musikgarten® Music Makers at the Keyboard (6-7 years)

Music Makers at the Keyboard lays the groundwork for keyboard success. The activities foster pride and excitement in making music both independently and with others. In addition to playing the piano, students will participate in dancing and drumming, singing, echoing patterns, composing and musical dictation.

NEW The Cello Experience (all ages)

Join us as we experience the joy of learning and playing together in this skills-based group experience! Cello players of different levels will be engaged with a variety of games and activities while addressing topics such as good posture and tension issues, essential musical elements, and ensemble skills. More advanced students will model basic skills and have the opportunity to experience using other skills such as shifting to higher positions, harmonics and thumb position. Less advanced students will contribute at the level at which they are comfortable. For players ranging from beginners through those playing in Suzuki Cello book 4. Note: for complete beginners, you will additionally need to be enrolled in individual lessons.

NEW The Treble Makers Youth Choir (Grades 3-6)

Do you have a child in your house that loves to sing? This ensemble brings children together for the joyful exploration and celebration of singing! We work with children to develop healthy vocal techniques such as breathing, diction, posture, and expression while becoming more confident in their own abillites as performers. They will enjoy singing an appealing, diverse musical repertoire. No experience required!

Mary Poppins Jr. (8 to 18)

Join us as we go on a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious adventure to present this practically perfect musical! Auditions are for part placement only; all registered students will be in the show. This class is designed to teach kids the basics of acting and improv through the use of theatre games.  Students are encouraged to use their imaginations as they learn to build stories, create characters, practice teamwork, and gain self-confidence. An informal showcase will be performed by students on the last day of class.

NEW Pizzicato Players (9-12 years)

This ensemble is open to violin, viola, cello, and string bass players and introduces children to the basics of orchestra playing in a fun and friendly environment and will provide two performance opportunities for them. Students should have at least one year of playing experience on their instrument to participate. Performances will include: a combined concert with the Community String Orchestra on Nov. 14 and a student recital on December 12.

Rock/Jazz Improvisation (10 and up)

Would you love to improvise on the fly or get better at creating your own riffs? This interactive group class is the chance to learn the FUNdamentals of soloing over minor, major, and blues chord changes. Students must at least be familiar with the major, minor and pentatonic scales. Open to all instruments.

Through an active music making process, participants will build confidence, self-esteem, develop relationships with peers, be provided with opportunities for self-expression, strengthen a positive sense of self, develop tools for coping with anxiety and foster creativity. Each session is developed around the individual strengths and needs of the participants. Participants will have the opportunity to explore instruments, write songs, play musical games, and explore their creative self. We look forward to making music together!

This session has been postponed to the spring semester.

Fiddle Sticks (11-14 years)

An intermediate level string group designed to focus on a mastery of ensemble repertoire. Students must be able to read music and have at least two years’ experience on their instrument. Students will work to improve ensemble listening skills and develop the ability to perform four-part harmonies and rhythm conversation between sections while preparing for two performances: a combined concert with the CVSM String Orchestra on Nov. 14 and a student recital on Dec. 12.

District Band Masterclass and Mock Auditions

We are pleased to offer two opportunities FREE to all high school students planning to audition for PMEA District Band this fall. Students are welcome to participate in one or both. Note: When registering online, please write your instrument in the comments section.

MASTER CLASS: Oct. 22
CVSM faculty will provide students with strategies and other helpful tips as they prepare for their auditions. At least one student volunteer per instrument will perform the audition piece and receive real-time feedback and techniques from the faculty. All students in attendance will listen and learn from the experience of the volunteer.

Singing for the Stage Masterclass (12 and older)

In this masterclass we will explore the freedom of truthful storytelling on stage through song! Join us to discover ways to find a sense of “play” in your performances and explore your songs in a supportive group environment where everyone will have a chance to work one-on-one with our experienced instructor. On the final Saturday, family and friends can attend a showcase performance of what is worked on. Topics to be covered include important questions to ask yourself when working on new material, ways to relieve tension in the body, understanding the connection between the accompaniment and the vocal line, among others. Students will need to prepare a song to perform and explore in class- something they love to sing- and provide recorded accompaniment for it.

WORKSHOPS

Alexander Technique Workshop

To be your best musician, singer or dancer you must begin by addressing not only your instrument but yourself. This workshop will look at how the Alexander Technique has been helping performing artists for over 100 years avoid injuries, extend careers and increase overall levels of performance and expression. This is all possible through movement re-education.  Group, partner and individual movement etudes will encourage making music a whole-body experience. Come explore and become aware of habits that may be detrimental to your art form, holding you back from achieving your best!

Private individual Alexander lessons with Joe will be offered in the afternoon after the general workshop. Participants can feel free to bring their instrument or art form of choice along with them. Our registrar will contact you after you register to set up a specific lesson time.

COMMUNITY ENSEMBLES

CVSM String Orchestra (all ages)

Open to violin, viola, cello, and string bass performers who are comfortable playing in 3rd position (1st violin to 5th). Concert will be on November 14 at 7 PM. Register by Oct. 2 to pick up music in the CVSM store or to have it emailed prior to rehearsals. After that, music will be available at the first rehearsal.

The band performs level III and IV pieces twice a year with several rehearsals to prepare. It is perfect for musicians looking for a limited time commitment.  IceFest Concert on Sat., 1/27 at 3:00 PM.

Cumberland Valley Chorale (all ages)

Through a partnership with Wilson College, all area singers are invited to join the newly reimagined community choir at Wilson College- the Cumberland Valley Chorale. Come as you are, and learn to appreciate the instrument you already own, no matter whether you are a beginner or veteran vocalist. Repertoire selection will be eclectic including classical, musical theatre, contemporary, and a cappella songs of hope, faith, laughter, and love. (This ensemble replaces what we previously offered as New Horizons choir, and is now open to all ages.)
