The
Cumberland Valley School of Music
Founded in 1990, the
Cumberland Valley School of Music (CVSM) is a full member of the
National Guild for Community Arts Education. Our
offices and primary studios are located in Thomson Hall at
Wilson College, where we offer a wide range of lessons,
classes, workshops, and summer camps and present recitals
and concerts in the beautiful Thomson Alumnae Chapel, which
houses two recently renovated Steinway Concert Grand pianos
and a Moller Organ. However we also teach at the
Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA, the Montessori
Academy, Chambersburg, PA; CVSM Studio at 32 W. Main St. and St. Andrew School, Waynesboro, PA;
and St.
Ann Roman Catholic Church and St. Maria Goretti High School, Hagerstown, MD
(where we also teach three for-credit classes: Introduction
to Music; Choir; and Introduction to Musical Theater). Over 600
students are enrolled at CVSM in a given year, served by 55
highly qualified faculty members. Camps and programs have
also been taught in collaboration with the Chambersburg
YMCA’s Sam’s Gang, Neighborhood Ministries, and Network
Youth Ministries, and others.
CVSM teaches all
orchestral and band instruments, voice, piano, guitar, drama
and theatrical techniques, Suzuki piano, and numerous
classes for all ages.
CVSM sponsors the
Cumberbunds (a childrens' chorus); the CVSM Community
Symphonic Band; the CVSM Community String Orchestra; the
CVSM Concert Jazz Band; the CVSM New Horizon's Band (for
adults ages 50 and older); numerous student ensembles;
extensive performance and recital opportunities (last year,
over 500 students performed in recitals, and CVSM faculty
and students performed at over 100 different venues in the
area); and numerous workshops. We offer a full range of
outreach programs to area senior and community centers and
public and private schools (including private lessons to
students at Wilson College, Mercersburg Academy, Montessori
Academy, and St. Andrew School, and schedule
numerous events throughout the communities we serve,
including an annual Showcase Concert, an Awards Concert, a
series of “Musicales” (held in the intimate setting of
private homes), a Neighborhood Chefs' Walk, an Elegant Winter Dinner Dance
& Auction, a Celebration of Jazz
(featuring internationally acclaimed musicians such as Phil
Woods, James Moody, Turtle Island String Quartet, and Kenny
Barron), and an annual student Performathon.
Scholarships are awarded
based on financial need and merit, and students in need are
actively sought each year.
Our doors
are open. Come visit us, and participate in lessons,
classes, workshops, ensembles, and concerts. We believe
that music can enrich everyone’s life!
