TO HOLD FREE INTRODUCTORY CLASS ON

Innovative Program to Create “New Horizons” for beginning musicians over 50 years old
CHAMBERSBURG. Cumberland Valley School of Music will re-convene the CVSM New Horizons Band with a free introductory class and informational session on Thursday, September 8, at 1:00 pm at the St. Paul United Methodist Church Choir Room, 750 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA. This meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about this group. Specifically designed for adults ages 50 years old and over, the band is geared for those interested in learning to play or returning to a band instrument after many silent years. New members are encouraged to join, and beginners are welcome! Instruments will be available to rent or purchase if so desired, and refreshments will be provided.
Regular weekly sessions will begin on September 15 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
The CVSM New Horizons band is directed by Carl Sponenberg. He hold a B.S. Music Education, Wilkes College. M.M. Music Education, Eastman School of Music, and taught 34 years with the Big Spring School District, serving 18 years as department chair and 14 years as the high school band director. Currently, he plays clarinet with the Dickinson College Band, the Hershey Symphony, the CVSM Community Symphonic Band, the Harrisburg Concert Band, Center Stage Opera and saxophone with the Craig Sunday Jazz Orchestra. He directs the Shippensburg, PA Town Band, and teaches flute, clarinet, and saxophone for CVSM.
The New Horizons Band concept was developed by Professor Roy Ernst of the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music in 1991. Ernst identified the value of a beginning music-making course specially designed for senior adults. Sixty candidates responded to the first local newspaper ad – twice the number expected. In the ensuring years, similar bands have popped up across the nation. To date, there are New Horizons Bands and Orchestras spread across the United States – from New York and Florida to Alabama, Oklahoma, California, Texas, and Oregon and international groups in Canada and Australia.
Recent studies have determined that adults over 50 are the fastest growing segment of the population. The NHB programs embrace this burgeoning group of Americans, offering an activity that seniors can easily adapt to fit their needs. The NHB program restores intellectual stimulation and opportunity that members had previously relied upon the workplace to provide.
